Including Condition into Ecological Maps Changes Everything—A Study of Ecological Condition in the Conterminous United States

چکیده
In 2021, the Biden administration signed an executive order to protect 30% of American lands by 2030. Accomplishing this ambitious goal in U.S. requires understanding relative contribution public and private toward supporting biodiversity. New approaches are needed because existing focus on quantity habitat without incorporating quality. To fill need, we developed a 30 m resolution national condition index (HCI) that integrates quality measures habitat. We hypothesized including evaluation at landscape scales, both conservation-focused preserves working would provide better assessment value geographies for conservation. divided conterminous major land cover type into natural cultivated then spatially mapped multiple anthropogenic stressors, proximity aquatic habitat, vegetation departure from expected disturbance regimes. Each map layer was scored site impact distance decay combined final index. Field observations providing ecological conditions were used HCI calibration validation CONUS regional scales. Finally, evaluate management (conservation versus lands) ownership (public private) testing these While found differences across CONUS, functional largely independent protection status: clear other values. These results relevant guiding strategies achieve goals. Where similar data exist countries, analogous modeling could be meet their conservation commitments.

PROFILE Developing a Spatial Framework of Common Ecological Regions for the Conterminous United States
JAMES E. KEYS US Forest Service Washington, DC 20250, USA ABSTRACT / In 1996, nine federal agencies with mandates to inventory and manage the nation’s land, water, and biological resources signed a memorandum of understanding entitled “Developing a Spatial Framework of Ecological Units of The United States.” This spatial framework is the basis for interagency coordination and collaboration in t...
متن کاملA probability-based indicator of ecological condition
We introduce a new method for quantifying the ecological condition (C) of sites based on documented species’ responses to environmental stress. Preliminary research is needed to establish species-specific logistic functions, representing probabilities of finding individual species across an explicit reference gradient, ranging from maximally stressed (C = 0) to minimally stressed (C = 10) local...

متن کاملEffects of War on the Ecological Condition of the Persian Gulf (Iranian Parts)
In the present article, the environmental impacts of the Iraq-Kuwait war (1991) on the ecological condition and fisheries resources of the northern part of the Persian Gulf, during years 2001-2002 were studied. The investigated area included the whole stretch of the Iranian domain of the Persian Gulf from northwestern waters of the Khuzestan province to northeastern waters of the Hormuzgan prov...
متن کاملSetting expectations for the ecological condition of streams: the concept of reference condition.
An important component of the biological assessment of stream condition is an evaluation of the direct or indirect effects of human activities or disturbances. The concept of a "reference condition" is increasingly used to describe the standard or benchmark against which current condition is compared. Many individual nations, and the European Union as a whole, have codified the concept of refer...
